US nears government shutdown after Democrats oppose Republican bill that ‘guts healthcare’
The US federal government drew closer to a shutdown on Friday, after Democrats opposed a Republican-backed measure that would extend funding for another two months, saying it did not include provisions to protect healthcare programs.
The Republican-controlled House of Representatives approved the spending bill on a near party line vote, with only Maine Democrat Jared Golden breaking with his party to vote in favor. The Senate will consider the measure later in the day, but its chances of passage are slim, since it will need at least some Democratic support to clear the 60-vote threshold to overcome the filibuster.
Democrats’ rejection of the GOP’s proposal to keep the government open through 21 November sets up a showdown over spending that, if not resolved, could see federal departments and agencies close and workers furloughed at the end of September, when the current funding authorization expires.
I think it’s time for congress to have their retirement and benefits gutted
Chuckie and the rest of you bunch that folded last time. Hope you had your spine implanted over the summer:
- Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania
- Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada
- Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii
- Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois
- Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York
- Senator Gary Peters of Michigan
- Senator Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire
- Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire
- Senator Angus King of Maine (Ind.)
It’s criminal that we can’t recall a senator or a congressman.
Looks like Jared Golden needs to be primaried
We should really get do-overs on our votes when people misrepresent how they are going to vote. The Fetterman I’m getting is quite the opposite of the one I was sold…
On the upside, the CR is dead for now, no thanks to Fetterman.
The Republican-controlled Senate has failed to pass a short-term funding bill that would prevent a government shutdown at the end of the month.
Earlier, continuing resolution (CR) cleared the House, but ultimately stalled in the upper chamber – unable to reach the 60 votes needed to overcome the filibuster.
Democrats remain resolute that they will continue to block any bill if it doesn’t include significant amendments to health care provisions. Today, senator John Fetterman, of Pennsylvania, was the lone Democrat to vote for the GOP-drawn CR. While Republican senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Rand Paul of Kentucky, joined their colleagues across the aisle and voted no.
While fetterman was campaigning lots of us projected quite accurately who he was going to become
Yeah, I know there’s been a lot of told-ya-sos, but he tricked enough of us. I’m still glad he’s there rather than Oz, but I hate all these shit people running such a good chunk of the state. PA is pretty cool, and even a lot of the MAGAs I know aren’t usually the worst people, I just hate when they get the power to back up their dumbass talk. I just think we deserve better as a state. But I guess pretty much every state is in a similar mess right now…
The poor choices go back further than Oz/Fetterman
He ain’t no Golden boy that’s for sure.
They may not work directly for Trump but they work for Wall Street who wants the exact same thing
I was gonna cheer on a federal shutdown until it occurred to me that the worst parts of the federal government will certainly be exempted
Still hoping for it though. This government does not deserve to be funded.
Shut it down. Though as I understand they all still get paid.
