Donald Trump expressed certainty his big gamble to directly assist the Israelis delivered a knockout blow to Iran’s nuclear program — even as many supporters and detractors alike were warning that U.S. military action could draw the United States into an expansive regional conflict.
Trump, in brief remarks to the nation on Saturday evening from the White House, said the U.S. strikes “obliterated” three critical Iranian enrichment facilities and “the bully of the Middle East must now make peace.”
But it’s a risky moment for Trump, who has belittled his predecessors for tying up America in “stupid wars” and has repeatedly said he was determined to keep the U.S. and the Middle East from another expansive conflict.
The talking points I’m picking up are:
this isn’t a real war, we were in and out with precision munitions, and our people are back safe, everyone should praise them for being so awesome;
Iran has been a bully for decades, and somebody needs to punch the bully in the mouth, when that happens everyone stands back and is happy the bully got punched in the mouth;
this isn’t a new war, Iran has been at war with us and our allies for a long time via their proxy groups
Biden was never able to take care of business, now Trump is in and it’s taken care of, and only the Americans could’ve done it because of our awesome military technology.
That second point is so much more applicable to Russia, but they sing a wholly different tune with regard to that.
