It never stops surprising me how eager some people are to become meat crayons

It’s also the smell of smoke. The crackling. The heat. How the poking stick feels in your hand. Poke poke
Sure the pieces of land don’t matter to but the ukrainians, but if Putin gains anything it’ll signal to his own that he won and that attacking works. At this point any security guarantees mean basically nothing since the west has shown such a weak response, and Putin will just challenge the promises the moment he has the opportunity. Seeing how USA and western Europe still don’t seem to fully understand the situation, it’s easy to believe Ukraine can’t trust any guarantees given unless it’s something like straight up joining NATO, which isn’t on the table.
If Putin gains parts of Ukraine, the war will not end. It means he succeeded in the war; that the west is weak. Which in turn means the war will “end” as in Russia will just regroup and build it’s war resources for a while - maybe some years, maybe more, maybe less - and then attack somewhere again. Why would they stop? Russian imperialism is not based on logic or reason; it was insane to attack Ukraine in the first place.
It is pointless to expect Putin to be somehow reasonable or actively want to stop warring. It is also completely pointless to believe whatever he or his lackeys say, they’ve lied from every step on the way and will continue to do so for their own benefit. It’s very likely the war will continue whatever the result in Ukraine is anyway, it can only be postponed now that Russia has again started on this damned path. If Putin gains land, they won and it’ll continue; if they don’t gain anything, Putin needs to attack again to prove it wasn’t a loss. I cannot believe people still seem to think you can somehow just reason with Russia
Insult to injury. Soothes the sense of justice to imagine the humiliation and anger nazis could have felt when taken to the gallows
To expand a bit on the idea that the process itself is as important, or more important, than the resulting work standing in isolation
This leads to my take on photorealistic art: basically photography has made fully realistic drawn and painted art obsolete. Even “unreal” things that look real but aren’t based on actual places or things can be achieved by photoshopping pictures together in a fraction of the time it takes, to make something look even close to a photographic accuracy drawing or painting by hand. If you see a picture of photorealistic art somewhere you’ll just think it’s a photograph or photoshopped, unless someone explicitly tells you it’s painted. The visual representation of photorealistic art has stopped being meaningful as it used to be, and the works need the context of the hard labour to be appreciated as what they are.
As a disclaimer though, photography and digital editing can be art in themselves, I’m not making point about that. It’s just fascinating how the value of hand drawn photorealistic stuff has almost fully shifted from the visual representation of reality to the actual process of producing it
Yeah numbers are pretty hard to conceptualize unless you already know what they mean. The addition I would do is put the actual numbers there as well at the same time, so you could get a good reference with an example
“Hey why don’t you use this tool you don’t need? It does the thing worse than you do and also fucks up the planet in the process!”
I say this as someone from the overseas (for the context): from here it looks like you are living in a fascist takeover. I can’t say what you can or should do about it - what do I know. But you have a dictator in the making, your court system looks to be failing in preventing anything, you even have the fucking gestapo now. Your vulnerable groups are already either being taken or basically being prepared to be taken. Scientists and researchers are leaving. It’s only a matter of time when they start coming for dissidents…
Maybe I am wrong, I hope I am wrong - and again what do I know, basically nothing. But it is looking bad
I don’t see a problem with being public and having limiting rules - it’s perfectly fine for women or minority groups to have their own spaces - but never before have I seen such an odd approach to moderating. I too tumbled on one of their threads from ALL and it felt like at least third of the comments there was responded with, paraphrasing, “please never post again”. If every discussion reaching ALL gets like that, I’d imagine it would be easier to figure out some other solution, since it takes such insane amount of effort to go through so many comments and probably profiles and posting history to know who to reply that to, from moderating perspective. Or are they just saying that to everyone? Or everyone not subbed?? I doubt that many people getting answered with “please never post again” would want to join even if they did qualify…
It’s just… I don’t understand the logistics of all that
While I would say that the language barrier is squing things a little
To go on a tangent from this; this is literally the problem I’m constantly struggling with tech stuff. I am not fully illiterate in things (I’ve build my desktop, I’ve booted from USB, I’ve done quite interesting things with php etc. etc. small stuff) but I’m also not on a “Lemmy level”, for example never installed or used Linux, I don’t know Rust, nor do I understand a lot of the talks here.
But; English is my second language, and I’ve never had any formal schooling in IT. There are a lot of tech words that do not translate literally into my native language. So if I want to understand something, searching for things is an absolute nightmare. I often don’t know the English term, and I usually don’t know the proper tech term for it in my native language either. Translating doesn’t help since translators don’t understand the terminology but will translate literally, which again, doesn’t help in either direction. So I’m left guessing and trying to piece things together based on vague descriptions by people who understand what they’re talking about and expect the reader to understand as well.
On top of that the FUCKING SEO has made everything so much worse since trying to search anything with the word “optimizing” will only yield completely irrelevant things about SEO. I hate it I hate I hate it
Befriending wild animals on their terms is awesome, no matter are they slugs, deer or birds. I’ve been bribing the neighbourhood corvids for about three years now, and gotten a few friends.
Hey, finally one without any downsides!
I get it. Never felt really welcome in those spaces, even though I’m trans and very much on the left as well.
Unrelated, but this just brought back memories from long ago when I was a kid and used to watch the advertising channels on purpose. Endless stream of useless gym equipment and weird kitchen tools; they painted such a bizarre and surreal world full of repetition, forced plastic smiles and all sorts of almost otherwordly things that had nothing to do with reality. It was fascinating, almost like watching something of the fae folk
I only care about them because of dr. Doom - and they somehow immediately fucked that up yet again. It takes some serious skills to make such bad decisions, thrice
It’s just the risk that has to be taken when threatening to bite, if the threat is bluff it’s not wise to try it. I mean it’s probably not wise to try it in the first place, but sometimes idiots just need some bared teeth at them to learn
Verbal warnings are for when the touching attempts haven’t yet happened. When the hands get close, the first snap is the warning. To have aura of insanity there are no second warnings
People are prepared for punching or screaming and shit, but usually nobody is prepared to get bit, so probably even if the risk of violence is higher. But getting a chunk out of some jerk has its own satisfaction, they will remember it even if you get hurt worse
To be fair English would probably benefit if we all just started using IPA to write it lmao. Using þ hardly causes any confusion compared to other issues with understanding how English is written and spoken
