To what extent do they have to talk about it, though? Can they address it, come to the conclusion that it’s infeasible (while subtly tucking millions of dollars from game companies into their pockets), and consider the matter settled? I understand that governments are meant to keep corporations in check to benefit the people, but functionally they keep the people in check to benefit corporations and their “lobbyists” (bribes).

It really is good advice, and you do get more and more energy to do it after you get started. The thing I did was DnD, and I just found people in the area advertising in-person campaigns and went to some. I only wanted to do a social day once every week or two, so I started with that. That didn’t last long, though, since after finding the one campaign to be really fun, I ended up joining 2 more and having multiple sessions every week! I wouldn’t have had the energy to start with that, but now I’ve got plenty. It’s a bit of a balancing act to both acknowledge the height of the mountain you’re about to climb, but also keep in mind that all you need to do right now is take a single step.

Yeah, she had just broken up with her boyfriend and found a bunch of “self-help” youtube videos that basically just said everyone who disagrees with you is a narcissist, then the algorithm started recommending her videos that said everyone who disagrees with you is actually an “energy vampire” literally and maliciously draining you of your life force. From there she got into all the crazy health conspiracies - which of course happened right as she was diagnosed with DCIS, which is easily treatable, but if left untreated becomes breast cancer. She dove head-first into all of the conspiracies after that, throwing money at anyone claiming to cure cancer so long as the method wasn’t backed by “big science,” and died of breast cancer a few years later.

It took my mom less than 4 years to go from crying in horror when Trump was elected in 2016, to crying in horror when he wasn’t elected in 2020, and lamenting her inability to join Jan 6 due to her cancer that was mysteriously worsening in spite of all the 5g blockers and expensive heal-all herbal teas she bought.

I dunno, I grew up with the “there are kids starving in Africa” spiel and other such lectures. For my family, it was more like the idea that “lesser” parts of the world had problems because they were “lesser,” and if anyone is suffering in America it’s because they brought that “lesser” mindset with them from elsewhere.

Yeah, I’ll often spread spilled water across the table just so that it evaporates within a couple minutes.

The phrase “got your six” is a variation of “got your back,” referring to the method of using a clock face to denote direction. So, your 12-o-clock is directly ahead, your 3 and 9 are your right and left, and your 6 is behind you. Kind of a weird thing to put on your license plate, but I’ve seen weirder.

I mean, they’re trying to say that the terrible colonialism practiced by the European-based American people against the native Americans is happening again in Israel, which is definitely a good point to be made. We’re well past the ability to stop the atrocities committed by America in the past, but we’re able to stop Israel today. The same idea applies to the terrible treatment of non-while populations in America today by ICE and other agencies, while we’re on the topic of preventable atrocities.

They did all this because they know that the vast majority of the playerbase will never hear about this, and many of those that do will either forget, or simply not care enough to boycott the game. We’re in an age of apathy across the board, with so much bad press that any given scandal just fades into the background noise.

I smuggled a whole pan of brownies once. I barely even tried to hide it, but nobody asked about the weirdly square bulge on my stomach. They don’t care.

I saw the new one with my father in law today, after not having seen one since the original trilogy. It was just not good. I’m usually able to turn off my brain and enjoy a movie regardless of the quality, but there were so many things that didn’t make sense, or were glossed over without explanation, that I just couldn’t suspend my disbelief.

I learned this by accident while heating up some hot cocoa as a kid, haha!

It depends on your strategy, and the amount of effort you’re willing to put in. I’ll talk to guys who tell me they found no success on dating sites, but when I ask them about it, they’ll talk about their experience as if all they did was send a “hey” DM to every girl on the site. The quantity-over-quality approach just doesn’t work, since girls are already getting an overwhelming amount of messages, and something generic just gets lost in the noise.

When I decided to bite the bullet and do online dating, I got cleaned up nice, planned a few events with friends to get nice, active, up-to-date pictures, made a well-thought-out profile, and spent a couple hours every day reading through the profiles of potential matches. I’d only contact the ones I not only liked, but that I felt might like me as well based on their profile. I’d find something I wanted to talk to them about, and make a personalized DM for each one that could serve as a good conversation starter.

It took a few months, but I eventually found a partner - we’ve been together for 8 years, married for 3. I’m not sure how much of my experience was luck, but my wife tells me that a lot of what interested her in me as a match on the site was my profile responses, interesting pictures, and unique DM topic, so the effort definitely made a difference.

When I was a kid trying to play flash games on dial-up internet, I found they took almost exactly the same amount of time to load as it took for me to make and eat a sandwich. I ate a lot of sandwiches.

You can see that the arms didn’t melt at all, so it’s more likely that they just put too many toppings on without an exposed crust to keep them in, causing them to spread off of the crust as they melted. I’ve done the same when I get overzealous with the cheese on homemade pizza. The crust underneath probably still looks like a minion.

Better in a vacuum, yes, but as /u/disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world pointed out, a huge amount of voters pay absolutely no attention, and just vote for whatever color they’ve always voted for. Hell, a bunch of people searched “Did Joe Biden drop out?” on election day, because they paid so little attention that they didn’t even know about Harris. That’s an extreme example, sure, but it’s just not a realistic expectation to think people will really think hard about a 3rd party, especially when it won’t get a proportionate amount of attention even if it got a huge amount of support, thanks to the billionaire-backed media.

If we don’t get someone into one of the 2 established parties, we’re crippling ourselves, likely to the point of immediate failure. It would be significantly more viable to change one of the parties by flooding it with new socialist politicians than it would be to build up a new platform based on socialism from the start.

It’s no accident, I’m sure. They are better, as they’re not helping the killers, but they’re nowhere near as good as is necessary to stop them. Pretty much the perfect definition of the average democratic politician these days: you vote for them to stop the killing, but you know that - whether by choice or not - they won’t do anything to prevent more deaths when the killers come back into power.

I’m happy we’re electing people like Zohran Mamdani, but we’re going to need a lot more of them before our leftmost viable party can be considered even a little left. We need politicians that make change, and when the system doesn’t let them, they band together with the rest of the population to force it, instead of just complaining about how they wish they could make change but can’t. The leaders need to be leading the charge, to battle if necessary.
