I’d say RAM is going to be the largest performance bottle neck for a desktop environment on an older machine. 4gb of RAM? don’t bother with cinnamon, you’ll likely have a much better experience with Mate or XFCE. 8gb is about where I’d even bother to test out cinnamon.

Is it 2006? I had no idea Abercrombie & Fitch was even remotely relevant anymore.

I’ve been at it for about three years now. Started with Pop!_OS for my first try. Back then I had a laptop with an Nvidia GPU and I had a ton of problems using a secondary monitor. I ended up switching to Linux Mint, and In cinnamon, games would open on the wrong screen and I didn’t know of any easy way to force them to another screen. I later had the same issues with KDE and Gnome on a variety of distros. Eventually I came across EndeavourOS, and my dual monitor issues were mostly solved, but I still had a lot of quirks with the eventual adoption of Wayland.

Then I bought a desktop. A full AMD rig, Ryzen 7 7800x3d and a Sapphire 7800xt Nitro+. This changed everything. I had no idea how much easier things would be without being hamstrung by Nvidia.

I ended up spending a solid year running Fedora Workstation (Gnome) and loved it until I decided forcing gnome to look the way I wanted it to made it too unstable. Time to try a tiling WM. I tried an install of Fedora with Hyprland and always had issues with it. So I remembered my old friend EndeavourOS. I installed it without a DE, installed Hyprland with some preconfigured dot files to start from, and holy shit. This is gonna be home for a while. Sooooo incredibly smooth, positively gorgeous, insanely snappy and stable.

I’m really grateful for all the lessons along the way. The distros mentioned above probably only account for 15% of my distrohopping experimentation, and the problem solving taught me tons of things I wouldn’t have learned otherwise. Linux is meant to be explored and savored.

Years of using gnome is why I finally got the gumption to try and eventually stick with Hyprland. It’s so much easier to get the aesthetics I desire in a functional and minimal desktop than it was in gnome, which I love, but used to break frequently.

lol, my riced out EndeavourOS install running Hyprland could probably be considered aggressive modification, but with the right wallpaper and settings it looks pretty clean and minimal. I’ll see about getting some screenshots when I have time for a post.

But yeah, I like the idea you’re running with. I’ve been all over the linuxsphere distrohopping and there are a lot of very pretty desktop environments out there. Even just Linux Mint Cinnamon without any modification is a gorgeous desktop.

I’m gonna get some screenshots together for a post, leaving this comment as a reminder to myself.

But yeah, if this community could have a few less chibi anime waifu wallpapers than UnixPorn does, I’m totally down to support it.

A long time ago, republicans needed an easy way to get voters to vote against their own interests and instead vote in the interest of the corporate overclass. Abortion. It’s genius. Make the preachers ultra wealthy by getting them to preach about something the Bible never seemed concerned about. Abortion. They’re murdering babies, you just have to get out and vote.

Eventually that strategy brought diminishing returns. They overturned Roe and the issue doesn’t have the same bite that it once had. They needed a new plan. Wait, I’ve got it. Trans people existing. Trans people bad, and they’re trying to assimilate your children by existing. They’re trans animals now, pooping in litter boxes at school. How long until you have to refer to your children by neopronouns under the threat of incarceration?

Seriously. This is how trump won the election. This issue is the issue they chose and it works. I hear it from my rightoid coworkers all the time. The GOP creates boogeymen to get idiots to the polls and it works, and the democrats have nothing to counter it.

It has a banner stating that the website is under construction to comply with orange man orders, but everything that matters is unchanged, most importantly the “build a kit” guidelines.

I highly recommend people look at the kit guidelines and consider it a bare minimum for basic preparedness, even in times where our leadership isn’t completely off the rails.
