  • The Zygon Inversion - A Transcript of The Doctor’s Speech [edited for brevity]

The Doctor: You just want cruelty to beget cruelty. You’re not superior to people who were cruel to you. You’re just a whole bunch of new cruel people. A whole bunch of new cruel people, being cruel to some other people, who’ll end up being cruel to you. The only way anyone can live in peace is if they’re prepared to forgive. Why don’t you break the cycle?

    Bonnie: Why should we?

The Doctor: What is it that you actually want?

    Bonnie: War.

The Doctor: Ah. And when this war is over, when – when you have the homeland free from humans, what do you think it’s going to be like? Do you know? Have you thought about it? Have you given it any consideration? Because you’re very close to getting what you want. What’s it going to be like? Paint me a picture. Are you going to live in houses? Do you want people to go to work? What’ll be holidays? Oh! Will there be music? Do you think people will be allowed to play violins? Who will make the violins? Well? Oh, You don’t actually know, do you? Because, just like every other tantruming child in history, Bonnie, you don’t actually know what you want. So, let me ask you a question about this brave new world of yours. When you’ve killed all the bad guys, and it’s all perfect and just and fair, when you have finally got it exactly the way you want it, what are you going to do with the people like you? The troublemakers. How are you going to protect your glorious revolution from the next one?

    . . .

The Doctor: This is a scale model of war. Every war ever fought right there in front of you. Because it’s always the same. When you fire that first shot, no matter how right you feel, you have no idea who’s going to die. You don’t know who’s children are going to scream and burn. How many hearts will be broken! How many lives shattered! How much blood will spill until everybody does what they’re always going to have to do from the very beginning – sit down and talk! Listen to me, listen. I just – I just want you to think. Do you know what thinking is? It’s just a fancy word for changing your mind.

  • Doctor has advised “low impact” exercises such as swimming and cycling as alternatives

Those would be good alternatives if I had access to them. No pool anywhere nearby and no infrastructure to cycle safely. Rural area is aggressively anti-cyclist. Like “people will run you off the road into the ditch for laughs” aggressively anti-cyclist. Too poor to afford stationary equipment, much less a home with a yard to put a pool.

Even still, I’m fighting a losing battle. My body will atrophy no matter what I do. All any exercises will accomplish is slowing the degradation. Already have partial loss of use in my hands, haven’t been able to play my guitar in over a decade now, and only a matter of time before I can no longer use my legs.

  • This. No matter how much I do it, I never get that “invigorated” feeling people talk about.

I always end up just feeling like shit and, because of my CMT, I take longer to recover. What may take a normal person a few hours to recover from will take me an entire day. My normal is being constantly fatigued, exercising just exacerbates it. Hell, not to even mention that my doctor even told me that running is not a good exercise for someone with my condition because of the inevitable atrophying of the extremities means that impact from my feet hitting the ground is damaging my joints.

I’m also autistic and the sensory overload of being sticky from sweat and overheated from exertion literally makes me want to flay myself to escape my own skin.

Never said it would, but neither will you being a wet blanket to people who are just trying to make the best of a shit situation that they cannot affect in any materially significant way at this current moment.

And FYI, that “magical thinking”, does help bring change. A movement without hope is a movement that is doomed to fail. Look up “revolutionary optimism” and its importance for keeping up morale.

The easiest way to break an army is to break their spirits. If yours is already broken, then you are no help to anyone.

By allowing people to relieve some stress and engage in a little revolutionary optimism every now and then, even if it is far fetched and not realistic, so that people can retain their mental health and remember what it feels like to actually have hope about something in this shithole of a world we find ourselves.

You can’t change anything if you don’t have hope for a brighter future. This builds hope, even if it has to reach for it.

Not everything at every waking moment needs to be analyzed in depth. At this current moment, none of us could affect the outcome of this situation anyway, so let people fantasize.

  • Exactly. We need real direct action focused protests that actually resist what is happening, as in directly impede the effort of this administration in achieving its goals. Bring the gears of this nation to a halt until our demands are met.

Which means we need real organizing efforts, a federated group of organizations from across the country getting together, to discuss what those demands are and lay the ground work that will allow those resistance efforts to be sustainable.

This. People don’t like it when I say the US is a Paper Tiger. uS power doesn’t come from its military strength but from its economic strength.

If pushed hard, it would crumble. The only reason the US has military bases all over is to scare those countries into submission to exploit their workforce. Yet, all those bases are fucking expensive to just maintain. If those countries resisted, then the US loses its economic strength gained from their exploitation, and its military crumbles when it cannot afford to satisfy both it’s military contracts and maintain its presence abroad.

Not to mention the internal turmoil when the citizens experience the affects on society when the oligarchy can’t subsidize the consumerist lifestyle anymore. Thought that’s happening already thanks to the imperial boomerang.

  • That’s unfortunately all I expect these be in most localities.

They all seem to just be a “show up here for two hours and stand on the sidewalk”. The only one that has the potential to do something akin to a legitimate protest will be the one at the actual parade itself in DC.

Still, wish I could even get to one myself just to try and pass out some zines. They might not be anything more than screaming into the void, but they are also great chances to spread some information and find people.
