Oh they were quite all over the place literally black bagging people during the Black Lives Matter protests.

They’re there, they’re just acting as vigilante/militia members when they’re off duty as cops.

Same with the SPD in Seattle, either the Police Union or an organization representing a bunch of cops is pushing real hard to prevent the names of a bunch of officers present at Jan 6th from being revealed and formally investigated.

I saw this map in a different magazine last night. While it’s great, it should be mentioned that the map has a notation at the bottom saying it’s a copy of a map hosted off-site and may be out of date. “Click here to go to the original hosting site”, or similar words.

And the site that it links to is ICE.

So, thoughts: It’s great that this is being mirrored off-site, but the mirror may be outdated. ICE may also contaminate the original data at some point. And if you want to access the actual current map, ICE will have your IP address (and has an executive order saying they can raid your house without a warrant), so perhaps take some precautions before clicking on that link.

It’s a map created by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center and they host an interactive map that you can mouseover. They get their data from ICE, whose website includes a non-interactive map in the form of a PDF. ICE is encouraging people to visit their site and write to their local law enforcement, they’re not going to waste resources tracking every visitor to determine if they’re really part of the target audience for their message.

It shouldn’t need to be said that the link is to ice. The link clearly says “ice dot gov” in the text. This warning sounds overly paranoid.

        A) Not everyone checks URLs before clicking.

        B) It’s not like they have to individually track down everyone who visits, they just need to turn on logging for that page. At some point, they’re going to find someone they want to prosecute, and that log entry will be part of their case that the person is an active anti-government actor, because they like to pile on every charge they can possibly think of.

This is pretty poor way to represent the data. The dots are almost impossible to distinguish based on size and they overlap too much in too many places. A choropleth map with divisions for municipalities would probably have been better.

These are the worst possible color choices to make a useable map for my colorblind ass.
