The thing that is kind of weird for non-Americans to understand is the way so many Americans seem to fetishise patriotism. Greatest country in the world! Freedom! Free speech! etc. We’ve all seen it all over social media for fuckin decades. And the praise for the military defending our freedoms! Seriously, when was the last time the US military was involved in a war that was actually in defense of America? It’s been a fair fuckin while.
Most of us have been conscious that there were probably a lot of Americans who didn’t feel the same way, especially those who weren’t white, straight, male, etc. All that stuff they were so proud of was the emperor’s new clothes all along.
For the sake of all the many decent people in America, and the rest of the world, I hope you guys can get a fuckin grip.
I see displays if nationalism from other countries all the time. We’re not less human than you and there’s something inherent in feeling pride or belonging to the place you come from.
