Probably because this horseshit wasn’t the state of things when they joined, and now they’re years deep in their military careers and didn’t expect to get kicked out of the military, losing their pensions. It’s difficult to have your life plans stolen from you on the whims of some assholes. I’d probably try to cling to it too.

I don’t understand- this nonsense was always there. From genocide support to invasion to hegemonic expansion of an empire … nobody actively involved in military service today is there by force of draft.

WE SHOULD NOT BE SIGNING UP FOR THIS STUFF.

Yes, modern capitalism has made it so some of are, by design so desperate we “must” join. But we should at all steps support people who don’t want to join or want to get the heck out.

nobody actively involved in military service today is there by force of draft.

That could only seem easy to say with the benefit of a stable job and housing and an education, in other words the remarkable privilege of not having to worry about what to do after high school or how to escape poverty. Add in nationalistic public education and the dangling of tens of thousands of dollars in sign on bonuses and your “should” starts looking a hell of a lot less persuasive to a bunch children whose prefrontal cortices aren’t finished developing yet. Children join the military because they are brainwashed from birth, indoctrinated into the civil religion to believe that their lives are worth spending for freedom and democracy or whatever the fuck, not because they’re carefully weighing the moral options before embarking on a life-altering and hegemony-supporting “career path.”
