Unwillingness to do some radical self-examination or entertain hard truths about the history of the place they live help ensure that it’ll keep happening. A lot of people can only emote at bad things and refuse to understand how or why they occur.
It’s because they genuinely don’t consider foreigners to be fully humans; they see them as extras in the story of America. That’s why they get so angry at Trump, because he’s treating ‘main characters’ the way America has always treated lesser humans.
