In 1204 AD, Roman Catholic crusaders from Western Europe, whom the Greek Byzantines called Latins, took over Greece in a half-assed way to please their creditors on their way to crusade (they never made it to the crusading part), weakening the Byzantine state to the point where it would fall to the Turks two short centuries later. Great disaster!
